1. Know what job you are applying for and alter your resume accordingly.
2. Make sure your resume is not too long and wordy. Nobody cares about how you worked at a coffee shop during college twenty years ago if you are now an electrician.
3. Before you list someone as a reference, check with them first to see if that’s ok. If you don’t ask them first, you might get screwed when it turns out that the person hates your guts and thinks you do terrible work.
4. Put together a list of things that you are good at and talk about how they are relevant in your work experience.
5. If your resume is on an online job website, you have to use the right keywords to guarantee that potential employers can find your resume.
6. Make sure to describe your job experiences accurately with precise and correct job titles. For example, writing that you worked in Accounting is very vague, but writing that you were the assistant tax manager is specific.
7. Make sure to read through your resume several times and proofread it, because if you have typos in your resume, you might not get hired because the boss thinks you are an illiterate loser.
8. Dont use long paragraphs or blocks of text ” break the resume up into bullet points so the employer can quickly scan your resume.
9. List your most important information towards the beginning of the resume.
10. Examine your contact info and make sure that it is right.
11. Elaborate upon things you have succeeded in doing, not things you are obligated to do.
12. Do not include a photo of yourself. It will not help you get hired unless you are a model.
13. Include a personalized cover letter with each resume.
14. Do not include how old you are on your resume. Your boss does not need to know this - he can figure it out when he meets you.
15. There is no need to put down all the jobs you have worked in. If you are not ok with doing so, then don’t do it. But the employer may question you in regards to the years you appeared to be absent from the work force.
16. If you have a gender-neutral name such as Alex or Lindsey, include a Mr. or Ms. To avoid confusion.
17. Do not lie on your resume. Background checks can find out a heck of a lot of stuff. If you cant back it up, dont list it.
18. Your hobbies are probably not relevant to your job, so don’t list them.
