In web development, internet marketing, and SEO, links are connections from one web page to another web page. Internal Links are bridges from a web page on one website to a different web page on the same website. A perfect example of internal links are navigation bar links. Internal links might also direct you not just to another page on the same site, but to a specific spot on that page, or for that matter, an internal link may bring you to a specific spot on the same page.

The value of internal links is that they enable users to maneuver around a website. They are commonly seen on a navigation bar. Search engines do notice these internal links. So when you are setting them up, carefully craft their anchor text, because that represents some value in the overall scheme of page relevance.

Incoming and Outgoing links are two different types of external links. Both types connect from one website to another website. The difference between the two is that if you have a link on your site that sends your visitor to another person’s website, that is considered an outgoing link. If another person has a link on their website which sends their visitor to your website, that is an incoming link.

Incoming links are desirable because they provide two different benefits to the website owner. First the site benefits from added traffic, and that’s a positive thing. Second, the site gets a vote in terms of SEO. It is valuable to try to get high quality, pertinent incoming links because it will help increase your site’s ranking.

Outgoing links are useful because they provide extra value to your sites visitors in providing them references for additional material on topics that interest them. Outgoing links allow website owners to benefit from the traffic at other sites because by linking to established, credible, and authoritative sources, a website can build credibility amongst its visitors, display its judgment of relevant, quality information, and establish authority in its field. If you have too many outgoing links though, you are spreading yourself thin and will appear less credible to search engines, so choose your outgoing links wisely. Both the quantity and the quality of your links are integral to thorough and comprehensive SEO. When in doubt as to how to maximize your use of internal, incoming, and outgoing links seek the counsel of a qualified SEO company.
