The connected nature of today’s workplace has made working at home a possibility for more people than ever before. Many people, in fact, have better equipment - higher powered computers, faster internet access, more comfortable office chairs - in their home offices than their workplace. Of course, working from home for either your regular employer or when starting a home based business requires discipline and motivation in order to achieve success.

If you can stay motivated, then online business can be extremely successful sources of revenue. Keep in mind that you need to be creative and take on some risk; if you do not, then you will be stuck with an ordinary job. Success has to be the motivating factor in any home based business.

Getting Started

The hardest part about a home based business can be getting started. There are some start-up costs, especially if you do not currently have a home office. Perhaps the most important part of creating a home office, especially if you have a family around, is choosing a dedicated area that is separated from the rest of the home. Most of the time, this just involves having a door that can be closed to give you time to work in peace. However, it can be in the garage or even a separate building if that makes more sense for you. Find a place that you can make your own and set it up to cater to your home business needs. Otherwise, most likely you will simply need a basic setup.

Access to the internet is a must if you are working remotely or setting up an online business, and it is important to find a reliable provider. Your employer and/or clients will not be happy if you are frequently unavailable due to internet outages. Buy a computer that suits your needs. If you already have a family computer, set up a separate account that is strictly for your home based business. This will help you avoid distractions, such as personal email or paying your family’s bills when you should be working. A printer/scanner/fax combination is a space and money saver, but you may not need all the functions. Buy only what you need to start out with - you can always add as you go along.

Finding Motivation

Once you have set up your home based business, it is time to concentrate. But then the doorbell rings. And the baby cries. And the toddler wants a glass of milk. And your spouse thought that since you were home anyway, you could run a few errands. And your family members now view you as the perfect companion any time they want a lunch or shopping companion. These distractions can build up easily until you realize that it has been a week since you have actually had time to do any work! Of course, things do pop up, and most likely the reason you are working from home is to have the flexibility to spend more time with your family.

One thing that you can do is to make it clear to yourself that work time is for work activities and list out everything that needs to get accomplished. Create a schedule that works for you and stick to it. Inform the family that they are not to disturb you during working hours unless it is an emergency. If you have children, you may find it worth the investment to hire a friend or family member to come and care for them while you are working to minimize the distractions. You have to remember that it is essential to find the motivation to succeed. With motivation, you will be able to dedicate yourself to the task at hand and make your home based business successful.
