
The world is witness to the many terms and names of tiles. This article is written to give us a background on the terms of tiles or ceramic tiles that are being used around the world. Since each country has different procedures and ways on how to create tiles, uses different materials and styles of decoration- no two kinds of tiles are alike, especially if they were made countries and cultures apart.
Tegula tiles is of Spanish origin. It is used to refer to roof clay tiles that are very famous in Spain Architecture. These types of tiles are famously used during the 19th century Spain up to the early 20th century. These are large clay tiles that are perfectly complimented by the large brick and stone houses and edifices that were rampant at Spain. It also made its way to Spanish colonial houses of the Philippines and in the mansions of bourgeois families of Mexico- also a Spanish influenced country.
Vigan tiles came from the Philippines. It came from the word Vigan, which is actually a famous town in Ilocos province. Vigan tiles are reminiscent of the famous cobbled street of Ilocos. In here, you can see old Spanish styled stone and brick houses that the residents managed to preserve for four hundred years. A Vigan tile possesses the following characteristic: rustic-looking, brown or earth color, made of clay, big and heavy tile pieces. These tiles can be placed in an area to achieve a Tropical or Spanish-Mediterranean look.
The Islamic Art and Architecture is both magnificent and majestic because of the ceramic tiles that go with it. We often see these images all over Islamic mosques and monuments. Islamic tiles are very flamboyant and intricate, always showing off sacred symbols and cultural signs. Islamic tiles are renowned around the world for its rich design, history and durability. Centuries old Islamic monuments are still standing as of now because of the high quality and tough ceramic tiles they possess.
