Streetwalking, they say, is the worlds oldest profession. It started in the ancient world and continues today in our modern world. Some people say that it is impossible to end streetwalking, and that we should legalize it rather than continue combating it. However, other people feel that streetwalking is an immoral business and should be kept illegal, whether or not it is possible to fully eradicate it. The battle still rages on today, with countries like the United States refusing to legalize it, while European countries such as the Netherlands and Germany have legalized it and consider it a legitimate business.
There are many opinions regarding streetwalking and its tangled moray of moral problems. Here is a quick summary of the pros of legalizing streetwalking:
1. When consenting adults engage in streetwalking, there is no reason for us to have an objection to it. Streetwalking is a service that is exchanged for money, and should be considered part of the service industry. The only reason people object to streetwalking is because sex is involved and they are prudish.
2. By actively combating and arresting people associated with streetwalking, we are discriminating against someone on the basis of their occupation, which is illegal.
3. If we decriminalize streetwalking, we can make people accountable and keep records. We will be able to better keep children out of streetwalking and help those who were coerced into being streetwalkers.
4. By creating laws for streetwalking, if someone breaks them, we can find out and prosecute them. There will be consequences for anyone who mistreats their streetwalkers.
5. New laws in streetwalking will give prostitutes the rights and protection they are entitled to, as members of an industry. Rates of rape, violence and abuse should go down.
6. The economy can only prosper from streetwalking, with the new tax revenue and jobs that it will create.
7. Current streetwalking laws violate an individuals privacy by imposing regulations on the private behavior of consenting adults.
8. Legalizing streetwalking will allow the government to restrict streetwalking to certain areas and keep it there.
9. Streetwalking is usually run by criminals, and by decriminalizing it, we can make it respectable and let responsible people run it, not crooks.
10. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and AIDS can be properly dealt with through required training, testing and treatment. Hopefully this will have an impact on the spread of STDs.
11. No one has ever been able to stop streetwalking, so we might as well legalize it.
