DMAIC and DFSS are very different from one another. DMAIC can be applied for any business procedure, you can use DFSS only for brand new processes or products. Naturally, it’s always to meet the goal of the customer no matter which methodology is used.

The methodology used usually is maintained between businesses, as DFSS usually is specific to the business. There are a number of ways to use it, from office culture improvements to installing Six Sigma concepts that were put into place by a competitor.

There is more in the way DFSS approaches the process, as opposed to the singular optimization methodology of DMAIC. Six Sigma specialists on DFSS projects must have a detailed knowledge of customer specifications and requests prior to the project so it will be successful.

DFSS format contains variation within it, all of them when implemented have the same functions, but from one company to another the variations with have some differences. There is one variation that is pretty successful and widely used, DMADV. This acronym is for Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, and Verify.

Other variations on DFSS include IDOV, DMEDI, DCCDI, and DAMDV. The correct choice depends on the company and their goals as far as DFSS and Six Sigma deployment.
