Whatever your interest in the internet, be it trying to make money, communicate a message to the world, or just having fun, getting a good search engine ranking is of utmost importance if you want to get visitors to your site. There are other ways such as conventional article marketing (very time consuming) or pay per click advertising (very expensive). However, if you know how to do it search engine optimization is ruthlessly effective at getting visitors to your site and achieving your long-term goals.

Keyword research is the first, critical step to any successful SEO project. If you get it wrong then you could end up trying to rank well for a very competitive keyword and all your efforts will be going to waste. There are some great free tools for doing this like the Google Keywords tool. However, all the free methods have one significant limitation - they don’t evaluate the SEO efforts of the other competing sites and therefore establish how possible it is to compete in the rankings for that keyword.

I only use one tool for my keyword research. It’s a paid tool but it’s not expensive. It’s called MicroNicheFinder and you can find it listed in the ClickBank marketplace. It overcomes the huge disadvantages of the free methods in that it completes some rather complex calculations to give a numerical indication of the feasibility of achieving a top ranking for a given keyword. One of the most important variables that it considers which sets it in a league of it’s own is how thorough the SEO efforts of competing sites have been.

The other critical aspect for ranking well in the search engines is new, regular, keyword rich, unique content. Blogging is great for this and the search engines love them. It’s particularly important to regularly update the content of a site at the start of its life to catch the attention of the search engines.

At least as important or potentially even more important that the above is back links. Search engines monitor how well links to your site spreed across the internet, making the assumption that the more widely links are spread the greater the value of your site. Article marketing is a great way of adding backlinks. However, if done conventionally it is extremely time consuming and tedious. To save days of work I use Unique Article marketer which enables you to create thousands of unique articles from a single version and then submits them on your behalf to thousands of article directories and blods. The submission process is entirely automated. The great thing about article marketing is that you can incorporate yoor chose keyword in anchor text at the end of your article.

Now Unique Article Wizard is great for quantity of back links. The other thing to consider is quality of back links - i.e. the higher the page rank of the site that you are back linking from the higher the weight the back link from will carry in the eyes of the search engines. High PR sites that will accept a do follow (this is very important) back link are very difficult to find within your niche. For this I use a service offered by Easy Backlinker which is a basically a search engine for locating these sites. You normally get your back link by adding a comment to an existing post or article.

And that’s it basically. If you follow these methods you will get free search engine traffic for your site. I know that these methods work as I use them myself and I can therefore say this with absolute certainty. And the great thing about them is that they don’t take up too much of your time.

Search engine optimization does however take time and you shouldn’t rush it as your site could end up getting sandboxed. For free immediate traffic I tend to publish articles on EzineArticles, Hubpages and Squidoo. These send trickles of traffic until my SEO starts to kick in.
