You cannot earn a scholarship if you don’t apply for one. That may seem like a silly thing to mention, but every year, millions of dollars worth of scholarships never get awarded to a student, because no one applies. Whether you are about to finish high school or have decided to return to college after a stint in the “real world”, all types of financial aid are available. With all of the options that are available, everyone should be able to afford an advanced degree. Without one, finding that dream job will be difficult, if not impossible. Here are some suggestions that you might not have thought of.

If you are currently employed, talk to your boss. Lots of big companies like Costco, Walmart and Intel offer scholarships. These may not finance your complete education, but they can certainly help. Many employers offer tuition reimbursement, as well, if you are continuing your education in a way that will benefit the business. Check with your company’s human resource department for this kind of information.

A scholarship may be for as little as $500, as much as $40,000 or even more. Having a number of small scholarships does not make you ineligible for federal financial aid. This is where most of the money for college comes from these days. Any student, regardless of their age, can apply for federal financial aid. In order to qualify, you will need to demonstrate your need for assistance. In order to do that, you will be asked about your earnings during the previous year. You may also be asked about your parents’ income for the previous year. Filling out the paperwork is relatively simple, but having the necessary tax information makes it less frustrating.

You may be eligible for a scholarship regardless of how much money you make. Some are awarded to those with excellent math, science or writing skills. You career choice could help you qualify, as well.

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant Program or TEACH and the National SMART grant are two of the government grants that are currently available. Like a scholarship, a grant does not need to be repaid. The federal government provides more than $80 billion per year to help students achieve their goals. More employers are sponsoring students that want to become health care professionals or even truck drivers. When there are jobs to be filled, but not enough qualified people to fill them, money becomes available for education.

If you find that you are not eligible for state or federal financial aid and you can’t find a grant or scholarship that you are eligible to apply for, consider a student loan. Student loans finance more educations than you may realize. Whatever you do, don’t let your dreams fade. Consider all of your options and apply, apply, apply.
