Within Six Sigma, use of DFSS helps to create a new product line or business procedure for satisfying a customer request. DFSS has a variation named IDOV, this has four phases which are outlined below.
The first stage in IDOV is identification. Here, specific customer needs are identified. These needs will determine which product or business process will be designed. In order to launch a new product, it is vital to understand what exactly the customer needs out of a product or service.
Next up is the design phase. At this stage, the Six Sigma team must take a look at several issues that have to do with the critical to quality items identified in stage one.
For the phase of optimization the CTQ’s (critical to control) issues are explored. Tools for allowing the team to do advanced simulation are used to grade the tolerance level of the particular business process. Forecasts are made as to the ability of the process to perfom, with the alternatives taken in to consideration and optimization of the design as regards the design element.
As selected by the first three steps, a design is chosen to be validated for appropriateness by testing it. Here in this final phase the team then may start the implementation phase for the business process.
