Search engines are the most important part of the experience of using the internet these days. A search engine is, more often than not, the way that people find websites and any other information they are searching for online. Why? Simple enough - it’s the easiest, fastest way to find the information you’re looking for online! MyWirelessNews requires that you know how all of this works and why you need to know it, here’s the skinny on search engines.

A search engine has lots if what are called “spiders” or “crawlers” which wander the internet probing websites for their contents. When a site is submitted, spiders are sent there to examine the content. This information is sent to central point where it is indexed. If your site is linked to others, the spiders will do the same for these sites too. Every time your page is updated, it will be re-indexed the next time a spider hits your page again - which they will do periodically.

Another thing that websites do is to rank websites, along with sites linked to them. Every search engine has a different set of standards which it uses to determine ranking.

When you search for something with Google, Yahoo or another search engine what you are given as results are not actually real time results. Instead they are pulled from the search engine’s page rankings. As we mentioned above, each engine uses its own standards for rankings, which is why a search for the same term on two engines will give you different results.

What does all of this mean for your web based marketing business? Basically, it means that you have to know how search engines work in order for your online marketing efforts to be fruitful. Say someone looks up MyWirelessNews using a search engine. They will certainly look at the first page of results. They may look at the second page as well; but the third? Probably not.

Understanding keywords is so important to your business. You need to find relevant keywords which are searched for often but for which there is little competition (this will give you a better rate on these in a pay-per-click campaign). Used properly, you can use these words to get higher search engine rankings.

Being savvy about how search engines work can make all the difference to your online marketing business. Your site can be ranked on the first page of results, which is where it needs to be to thrive.
