Medical insurance protects you from the high cost of health care by offering you coverage for specific health care services. Out of pocket medical coverage is extraordinarily high so most don’t mind paying the premiums and some petty co pays to save such a huge amount of money. There are several kinds of coverage to choose from, umbrella coverage. Dependant upon your plan of choice it will be determined what your medical insurance will and will not cover.

A few policies will cover medical, surgical and hospital costs, however this depends on your plan. There are fantastic plans available, some that will generously cover just about anything including dental and optical, and others are not so generous. A fee for service plan covers a health care professional to be paid a fee for each health care service provided to the patient. Patients are allowed to see any doctor of their choice and then a claim is filed by either the health care professional or the patient.

Managed care plans give coverage for medical services to their members and offer lower out-of-pocket costs to patients who use doctors participating in a specific network. This is the type of coverage that most Americans have today, PPO’s, HMO’s, or POS are the most well known plans of medical insurance coverage.

If you opt for an HMO then you will see one specified physician who will be your primary health care doctor. This offers one primary health doctor who handles everything unless there is a need for another doctor for which he/she would provide a referral. Out-of-network care is usually not covered by an HMO plan unless an existing network was absolutely not available at the time.

A mixture of the two plans is the PPO. In other words, you would have an option of which doctor you want to see and if he/she is within the network you’re out of pocket expenses will be more affordable.

Take out some time to visit a minimum of five insurance quotes sites that offer quotes on health insurance policies. This will take you not more than 25 minutes.

As you visit each site, ensure you give the same information. Doing otherwise will give you misleading quotes. When you’ve received your health insurance quotes, compare them to see which serves your interest best in price/value.
