Basically, there are several ways of funding your college education One is to save up enough money in the first place. This, as we know, isn’t very easy. Another way is to get others to give you money for college in the form of scholarships and grants. The final way is to borrow the money, either through government backed loans or from private lenders.

Let’s talk about savings. The key with saving for college is to make sure that you’re keeping as much money as possible. For this, you’ll want a tax free college account. These are usually known as “529″ plans, and offer a tax sheltered method of saving for college. This is the way to go if you can.

If want to get scholarships and grants, you need to get good grades or fall under certain categories (need, race, course of study, etc.). Most of all, though, you need to apply. So many students leave money on the table by failing to apply to the scholarship they are eligible for. Don’t make this mistake yourself.

If you still don’t have enough money, you’ll need a loan. Student loans are one of the nicer types of loans you can have, but you’d still rather remain debt free if possible. There are two types of loans, goverment and private. Let’s see what each has to offer.

The standard Stafford loan is a typical example of a government backed loan. These loans are easily obtained, but may not have enough money to cover all students. Still, these loans are vastly preferable to most other loans, as they have quite a few forgiving options. If you don’t have enough money from these, you’ll have to go with a private loan, which may or may not have very good terms in comparison. Always shop around if you’re going with a private loan.
