I heard on the radio today that Americans were finally saving again after years of racking up debt. Saving takes discipline but anyone can do it by paying yourself first. A simple three step system works for me. 1. Add up all my bills for the month 2. Deduct that from what I make for the month 2. Deduct my spending money for the month and then deposit the remainder in my savings account. You can also do this on a weekly basis. Don’t write checks for anything but bills and live on your allocated spending money. This sounds so easy to do but it isn’t.
If youre accustomed to running your credit card or debit card on a daily basis, its best to cut them up and vow not to use them except in an emergency. Nothing gobbles up your savings like interest from credit cards. My three step approach to saving is only half of my strategy. After listening to a local radio show host who teaches money saving tips, I realized I could dramatically increase my savings by taking advantage of every discount I could find. Saving 10% of what you make every month would be a great start to saving. But, imagine coupling your monthly savings with an additional 10% when you make purchases. Now your setting at 20% saved for the month. Imagine saving 50% on other discounts like two for one entree’s at your favorite restaurant. Clip coupons and take every discount you can - this will stretch your spending money which in turn keeps you from going back to your savings account.
